Hi, I've seen this beautiful rose, yes it has white rimmed petals! Baron Girod de l'Ain

and wonder if anybody has one, if so what is your opinion, is it reasonably disease free or have any other problems?
I've also read varying reports on the level of fragrance, again any comments?
    Cheers MIKE

The one i saw had a good deep rose fragrance. It is said to be healthy and freeflowering. It's very attractive, the way the white streaks 'frill' the petals The only other rose I have seen with this colouring is Roger Lambelin, which is not so fragrant and a poor 'do-er' as it is very susceptible to blackspot. It does have a more consistently dark colour.

Looks like a wild rose, there are many varieties very similar.

Hi Roders, looks like R.Moyesii, you say growing wild, is it throwing any suckers from the base or you could try taking a cutting in August/September.
If it is a Moyesii, then it should have large colourful hips o follow the flowers.

    Cheers MIKE

Another beauty, so I am now trying to decide which I like best - this new frilly one, Baron Girod de l'Ain, or the candy-striped Ferdinand Pichard.

K-G, Ferdinand Pichard I can most definitely recommend, having had mine for 6 years or more. It does need a fair bit of space though, if I leave mine to its own devices it gets quite large, height easily 7' (2M1), spread 5'(1M5) plus
If you can train the branches sideways, like a fan or espalier fruit tree it will cover a lot more, from a horizontal or near branch the flowers stand up from it on short side shoots.
The scent is also beautiful. It is not so good if you want cut flowers from it as the side shoots carrying flowers are not that long.
I may be getting a Baron Girod de l'Ain when we go to Mottisfont if they have one in stock, until then I can only go by the one I saw at Mottisfont and the pictures and info on growers web sites.

    Cheers MIKE

Another striped one (pink and cream) is the beautiful Variegata di Bologna, a Bourbon bush rose with a fantastic scent. I got mine from Peter Beales (on-line) and it is my favourite now.
If I could only have one plant it would be a rose!

My new Baron Girod de l'Ain has flowered, the rain didn't help much, the first bloom got beaten about a bit but the second is only slightly marked.
The colour is a bit darker than the pic at the start of this post, more of a deep wine red, the scent is strong and glorious.
To save you agonising over your decision KG, sod the expense, get both.

Hi Mike, I've found a couple of good rose sites and one lists a place to buy not far from us, in Bad Zwischenahn. Prices of these lovely roses seem to start at about ââ??¬9 each, so I don't think that is too expensive. I've made a note of this one for future reference (can't see it being this year though), please tell me where you posted the other ones you have. Thanks.

ââ??¬9 is a good price, I paid about Ã?£10 for mine and that was as part of an offer of 3 for Ã?£30, usually about Ã?£11 each for container grown, bare root ones between November and March about Ã?£9.95.
Most of the ones I have are on my Fotopic gallery, the address is in my signature line below.
    Mottisfont ones are at

Rosie, I'm not sure where in Dorset you are, but it might be worth phoning Cranborne Manor Garden centre
    see here for contact details
    They usually have a fairly good stock of older rose varieties;
In Excess have a garden centre just outside Ringwood and stock some David Austin roses.

    see here

Not sure of they restock during the summer or only springtime which is why I suggest phoning first.
Container grown ones wil be a bit dearer than winter bare root ones, usually about £11 - £12.
