Be very wary of Kiftsgate, whilst being very beautiful it not suited to the average sized garden. We have Kiftsgate and I wish I had gone for Rambling Rector. Each of the stems on Kiftsgate are about 20ft..its a real wopper and is only good in a situation where it can romp away [IMG]

Poppy33, I bought Kiftsgate as I have plenty of room for it to spread, but it's not romping away at all. Did yours take a while to get going, or have I an inferior specimen?

    Hi Liz,
What your Kiftsgate is doing sounds much the same as ours. When we purchased ours from a specialist rose nursery, the owner asked us 3 times " are you sure you want this" we had the room and I bought it. For the first 18 months it stood still..no growth, no flowers :( Then in spring..WOW  Of course the nurseryman who new his stuff was right. this monster of a rose grew huge, great long stems. It is now in its 4th year, some stems are 40ft in lenght, this would be fine but they are not at all supple and very hard to Keep tied in. On the plus side, its very beautiful, flowers well and has lovely hips in the autumn. The growth of the rose in Wacos picture, whilst being huge, seems a lot more compact and not so sprawling. Good luck with yours, I am sure it will get going.

Another one that will do what Kiftsgate does, is the lutea - a lovely yellow, and excellent for climbing up buildings to disguise them!
Here's a pic of the Kiftsgate at the Gardens of the Rose in November with the hips giving a great colour - yes, it's pretty big!

For anyone who can't spot it, it's climbing all over the roof of the bit of the building sticking out towards the camera!!

The one I bought is growing against a.joint fence, above which is a rusty corrugated iron shed roof and a very large conifer. It's actually in neighbour's garden but I can see it too, so it's a joint effort. We're hoping it will cover the shed roof and go into the conifer.

    Thanks Poppy33

I was thinking of the one in wacos photo (Pauls Himalayan Musk) we have a large flowering cherry that is on the way out. The photo has given me an idea as to what to do with the structure of the tree.

Cannot remember the name of the rose I planted to grow through a tree. Only problem was that we went on holiday and when we returned the tree was down on the ground as was the rose..............
Net result - no tree now but the rose rambling away through a nearby trellis. Am afraid that next year the rose will be no longer.

Be aware this can happen if you get it wrong. Love Waco's picture - 0bviously the tree is much stronger than was mine.

The flowers last about two weeks and scent is superb, you can hear people going down the road talking about it and where it might be comming from.

There are no hips a such, a very slight repeat flowering.

The rose is obviously going to kill the apple tree, but it was old and on its way out anyway. We do cut it back a good deal.

I like it because it mimicas the apple tree blossom and I think this is an important point to remember when choosing. Somehow a yellow flower on the tree would have looked in mind to be a miss match with what you would expect and therefore not work, but then I can be a bit particular.

I have a pink rambler that grows through the old apple trees and mimics apple blossom. It will blossom next week so I'll take some photos then. Height must be about 30 feet! Hopefully someone will be able to name it as I don't know what it is..
