Ordered a Hozelock 1000LV pond pump from their end of season sale at 12.32 yesterday and it arrived by courier at 12.20 today!

    Top marks for service [IMG]

    Keengardener

Edit: All the parts were there but the only black mark (for Hozelock not Keengardener) is no plug was fitted to the low voltage transformer. It wouldn't normally be a problem but the plug should be fitted with a 1A fuse and I'll have to get one. Pump works great in the sink but I had to use a 13A fuse to test it.

I have always been led to believe that any electrical equipment sold within the UK, has to be supplied with a plug attached ?

I have never had a plug with a pump. I assume it's because when you need to feed the cable down a conduit you would have to remove the plug!

Just to clarify: the Hozelock Cascade LV range are 24V units used in conjuction with a 220/240V indoor low voltage transformer and my understanding is that all indoor 220/240v electrical equipment for use in the UK should be supplied with a plug and suitable fuse.

Low voltage wiring can be safely installed externally without incurring the wrath of IEE Regulations (It is ILLEGAL to instal fixed mains equipment outside without permant wiring and a Residual Current Device (RCD for earth leakage protection) and installers have to be certified for this class of work. Plug in RCD protected adaptors though relatively safe to use with portable equipment such as mowers or trimers are neither sufficient nor legal for permanant fixtures such as pond pumps. Mains electricity can kill so don't mess about with it.

Even with low voltage devices reasonable precautions should still be taken to prevent cable damage etc. (such as running it through a length of garden hose before burying) but isn't beyond the capabilities of any competant DIYer to prevent ingress of moisture to conections and cable. Wiring should be secure, unable to fray or move and be sealed with epoxy resin or pitch. Indoor trasformers should also be sited where there is free air circulation and no danger of the unit being inadvertantly covered. They should also be checked periodically for any signs of overheating

I'll be doing a pond renovation before, during and after so I'll include a bit more on this aspect at the time. Meanwhile I'll try to get some difinitive advice regarding the plug issue from our local Trading Standards

You dont get a plug on a pump, as stuart says, usually the cable will need to be connected to the mains by some other means.
I've never bought a low voltage pump so cant really comment on wether the tranny should have a plug, presumably it should.
If you put in an RCD, your better off with a 240 volt pump, thats what most people do, as far as I know.

I have dealt with Keen Gardner on several occasions, and havealways received rapid service - frequently less than 24 hours.
