Well, I'm more than my usual technophobe today as tonight as I've lost this message TWICE

How do you actually rate someone? Is it by their knowledge, as I would assume, or by the particular question at that moment (as t'other half says)?

And, how do you do it .. click on a star at that moment? Sounds stupid, but it's all a bit weird in my mind.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this question, so thanks in advance.

You can rate people who allow ratings for any reason you want- a helpful reply is always a good reason for lots of stars, or if you think their general knowledge is good.
If you look under the member no., if ratings are allowed by that member you will see in red type 'Rate Member 'or 'Member Rated'- click on that and you will arrive at the profile for that member. Look at the top right hand side an you will see a box saying 'Rate Member'- choose your rating from that menu then click 'Rate', and it's done.
If you want to know how many people you've rated, or how many ratings you have, click on 'my profile' underneath 'Gardeners Corner' at the top right of the page, and underneath the first box in your profile you will see a grey bar saying 'Your Rating' and details, then further along 'You have rated x users' [rating details]. click on this and you will see who you have rated.
The number of stars shown on your rating is the average of all the ratings people have given you. You can only rate a person once!

Thank you, Liz ... it's all so easy when you know how [IMG] It was the Rate Member / Member Rated bit I didn't know about. Perhaps this should be in the "how to" section also? Again, thanks!

With whom, Liz, me, you or Jay?

You're the clever one here, I am missing something about finding where the instructions are to rate a member ... obviously I now know because a very, very nice person (not mentioning any names) told me how to do it! :D

 I meant me, I don't follow why Jay thought she had not been of any help!
I think it took a while for me to suss out ratings and even then did not know I could only rate anyone once until I tried! I do know a few people have been confused about how to do it and where the stars come from. I've always thought of it as a good way to say thanks if you get some help with a problem. I've only once given a low rating [before I knew you could only do it once] and I still feel bad about it.... :(

I don't understand it either and I cannot find an explanation in the How To section, only what a rating is, and the only explanation appears to be that given by Liz.

I would also like to know why you can only rate a member once. It seems if someone has one star and you want them to have two stars, then you have to give them two stars, or three if you want them to have three, ie, give more than they already have, not less which would put the average down.

What if you do make a mistake? This is a very unclear area.

I agree about this, I found out by trial and error. One thing that a lot of people think is that giving a 1* rating is a compliment, whereas in fact it is the lowest rating!
Rating a person more than once would be a bit of a minefield- could lead to 'star wars' with people downrating others they had a disagreement with! But I agree about mistakes or reviewing later when you have new information.
You are right that there are no official instructions on how to rate someone. Perhaps we could ask for official instructions in the 'how to' section.

    Copied from FAQ:

    What are member ratings?

The administrators of this message board may permit members to rate each other. Only registered members may be rated and they can only be rated by other members. Even if ratings are being used on this board, you may elect to not have other members rate you. To turn off member ratings for yourself, just change your profile settings. This option can be disabled by the board administrators...........

its further down the link that Nathan Provided.

    Near the bottom.

What the rating Really means is the post or thread that the member posted/ or replied to.

You rate a * if you think it was ok,** if it was good....so on so forth ;)
