strange new fish

i fed the fish yesterday morning and then sat and watched

as you know i had a heron visit recently and i thought most have the fish had been taken


i have got LOADS of little black fish!!!

now, i didnt put them in the pond


where on earth did they come from and what are they? they look like goldfish but are black and approx 1-2" long

Glad to know some of your fish had fun before they became a heron's lunch, Loopy.

The Sissinghurst lakes are full of what I think are goldfish which have reverted over the generations to their original dark colour. Every now and then one appears which has just the odd golden scale!

 

My goldfish seem to go through stages, the small ones start out black but turn the normal colour after a year or so.
After that a fair percentage go on to turn white.

I guess its in the genes

 

When I had a sudden in flux of fish, the existing fish were too small to spawn and the only change that I had was to add some pond plants from a friends pond a few months earlier. I assumed the they came on that way.

tee hee hee, i keep trying to count them!!! its very difficult but i keep trying

they absolutely scoff their food - i feed small floating pellets and they make such a NOISE - like eating a packet of crisps really funny

an update

the fish are changing colour - one has lots of orange on it and another appears to be turning white

Hi loopy - when I had my pond back in UK, I started with about 12 fish, they were only about 2.5 inches long, put them in, in June they had babies, by late July, and yes all little tiny black ones, which as you now know do change colour as they get older.

Congratulations to mum and babies, wait till next year when you get even more :lollol:

When I moved into our old house there was a old and somewhat smelly pond in the corner. I cleaned it out and found lurking in the mud and silt at the bottom both black and gold fish. I did the same as you loopy lou and tried to count them to no avail. Anyway eventually the garden was remodelled and the pond went, I gave out over 120 fishes to the next door neighbours (they had a very big pond).

 

When I bought eric the fish, the lady in the pet shop said he would change to gold.

That was about 10 years ago, he's still black.

She wouldn't do a deal on a guinea pig either, I was only after a few quid off.

That cost her husband about £600, he asked for a deal when I repaired all his sash windows.

 

That must have been a good feeling .. :thumb:
