I have a 10 year old ACER PALMATUM it is growing in a very large pot and up until a year ago it did vey well but since then it has seemed to struggle.
The bark has a White Flufy excrescence in a lot of places, it is very sticky.I asked at a Garden Centre and was told it sounds like wooly aphid, so I sprayed it reguarly with WINTER WASH and then a wooly aphid spray it seems to have done no good the tree is in leaf but not as well as it used to be and also the white stuff is back any help appreciated?

Has the white stuff got a brown scale looking thing on it? if so it's scale insect. I've 3 maples and they got them this year. To get rid use Pravado insect killer, I s****e mine off first with a bit of stick then spray all over, then repeat as the bottle says. ;)

I guess you can't say s****e around here  [IMG]

Scale insects can be tough to control, you have to keep after them. Try and figure out which one it is, if you can, as some have hard shells and some are soft. You have to have your timing down when going after the hard shelled ones.

As far as the Japanese Maple goes I have had them come back well from things like this.
