I have been extending a veg patch in to some old grassland and have been finding large numbers of a small white grubs which I think may be the grub of Japanese Beetle. I do see a lot of beetles flying all over the lawn in summer but have never tried to do anything about them

Can anyone tell me the best way to get rid of these beetles, or are they no real problem.

Here is a photo I have taken of one of the bugs in case anyone can confirm what they are.

I think it's a chafer grub (but I'm not an expert  [IMG] ) They eat the roots of plants so I don't suppose you'll be wanting them in your veggie patch??
As for how to get rid of them - I throw them on the shed for the birds :D :D
I'm sure someone will be able to give you far better advice [IMG]

Yes, it is a chafer grub. You definitely don't want them in the roots of any of your plants, I do as windy does, pick them out and leave them for birds to eat. You can use various horrible chemicals to ge rid of them, but I've only found them really destructive in containers. Usually they're a lawn pest.

Many thanks for the ID, it would appear that it is indeed a Chafer grub and it seems that Nemasys produce a nematode to control it.

At a particular time in summer we do get plagued by hundreds of beetles flying all over the lawn and it seems this is the cause, so I might lash out the cash for nematodes this summer.
