Does any one know if having white fly in a compost heap is a problem?
If so any ideas how to get rid of them without destroying the compost.
Will it transfer into the garden or just die off?
Any ways to avoid this happening again?
Any advice appreciated as I am a beginner thanks.

If they are fruit flies then they aren't a long term problem in the compost bin.

Whitefly live on living plants, not decayed, so they should disappear as the plant matter rots. Apparently the eggs can withstand mild frosts but not a severe one. A good blast of frost [if we get one] should put paid to them.

As whitefly in the greenhouse is a pain to get rid of, don't compost any material which you know has whitefly on it- burn or send to the council tip, where hopefully the compost reaches high enough temperatures to kill it.

i dont know a lot on compost bins all i know is that they require heat and at this time of year they do not get it so we have added a mixture that helps break it down,i would not be afraid to use it in the greenhouse myself, but thats just my me i do try to fly in the convention,i can honestly say that i have never had problems with white fly in the greenhouse, due to using my compost

Thanks everyone, I feel a bit better now and will keep my fingers crossed that a good frost will kill the blighters off! They are definately white fly- tiny white arrow shaped moths. Had fruit fly problem earlier in the year and actually had them in the house as well when I had the caddy in the kitchen. So I keep the caddy outside now.
Anyone else had as many problems?
I thought composting was going to be easy, but there seems to be a bit more to it. Anyway thanks alot.

I'm tackling whitefly and aphids from a different direction. Every hibernating or semi hiberanting ladybird I find in the garden gets a new cosy winter home under a few peach tree leaves in the greenhouse. Hopefully they will do the job!
