I planted a rhododedendron two years ago and it liked its position and bloomed well, not only in the first season, but also the second. Now it has a mass of blooms but very small with the flowers drying out quickly and the leaves yellowing . Any answers would be grateful.
Leave yellowing, and flowers drying - it sounds like a water problem too much or too little - possibly needs some sequestrian as well. Can you give us a bit more information about where its planted - shade, sun, soil type -- and have you been watering and or feeding it?
It is planted in the front corner of the garden on a raised area in full sun. The soil,as far as a novice like myself knows, is good with not too much clay nor acid. I tend to feed all my plants every two weeks at this time of year but I do give a watering each evening after a strong "sun" day. I have given two feeds of sequestrian and one feed of Grow More this season so far.
The first sentance is the clue I think. Rhodies do not do well in full sun. They are shade lovers doing well in dappled and partial shade. They are quite shallow rooted so I would imagine that if its in full sun,its not getting enough water. I would lift it and move it into a shadier place - then give it a watering can full of water with a measure of miracid - and then keep it watered with rain water if you can, but if not, add some ,miracid.
