Can anyone recognise these bugs ?

Hi.

I have a problem with pests on one of my acers, and I have no idea what they are, but I Want to get my plant treated ASAP as last year I had to cut a section of it away as it died. I can only presume these pests are the cause of my problem.
I have enclosed a couple of pics so that hopefully someone may :

a) be able to identify them (aphids perhaps ?)
b) suggest a remedy/cure

I am a complete novice at gardening, so am relying on your expertise here .....

hmm ... having trouble posting a pic .. adn can't find an "Edit post" option either ?!?!

 

Steve you have to put the pics onto a host site such as photobucket first and then paste the IMG tag into your reply.
As for the edit post, its up the top the paper and pencil symbol.

So unlike other forums, I can't just point to local C drive and upload ?

oh well ... better make use of my BT webspace then !

You've cracked it Steve.
Look like aphids to me (though one looks a bit like a beetle). One of the proprietory bug sprays should help as does squashing with a finger.

BTW you can upload from your BT webspace. I've just done it from mine after seeing your comment I thought it was time to try it.

Yeah I thought Aphids ... but you're right in as much as theu look like beetles.
Flippin hard trying to take a shot in close up macro mode of a plant thats blowing about in the breeze.

I have a couple more so will post those to try and reach a conclusion.

Hi there and welcome. Not totally clear from the picture, but looks like a combination of aphids and ants. Ants often milk aphids of their honeydew, which is why they are often found together.

Bug gun should sort them whatever they are.

 

great. I have a "rose gun" in the garage, btu that says to use "only on roses".
I didn't want to take the chance of me killing my plant off without consulting the experts.
Now I'll invest in a bug gun

I could go "eco friendly" and try and get more ladybirds into the garden I guess, but wouldn't know how to do that.
Besides which .. would they kill the ants ?

 

Use the rose gun Steve, thats just the makers way of getting us to buy lots of different ones.
