Growing like a weed in our garden we have a mint-scented/flavoured plant which I know is very common, but I can't find a picture or like-sounding description on the internet. It's not like the stuff you buy from the supermarket for cooking and for mint juleps etc. It has leaves which are - for want of a better description - a bit fern like, grows small-headed, daisy-like flowers in summer (white petals with yellow centre) up to about 18 inches. It has a spread from a single root ball of about 10 inches.

Can anybody tell me what it is, and if it's edible?

Chamomile - not sure of the mint scent but the other bits sound alike.

Thanks Fiona - I think you're on the right track. I've been looking at pictures of chamomile on the web and it's very similar, but the leaves of the stuff I've got are more plentiful and slightly broader. None of the descriptions mention the minty smell, but I suspect it's some variety. We used to nibble the stuff when we were kids, thinking it was mint. On reconsideration I think the minty smell is a bit like that of some cut flowers - alas my ignorance lets me down as to which ones.

Thanks for the speedy response to my query.

Sounds like feverfew to me as well. There are different varieties of it that give different coloured leaves and and diferent colours for the flowers. Do the leaves of your one have a slighty yellowish/golden colour? Can you put a photo on here? If it is feverfew the leaves are edible with a slightly bitter flavour and used to be used as a cure for migraines (and fever).

Here's a pic of the stuff that grows in my veg patch. The flowers are small and white with yellow centres. Slightly minty smell:

I have the same plant in my garden and I don't think it smells anything like mint - it has a rather musty smell. I agree it may be feverfew and is very hard to remove.
