I have a small partialy shaded flower bed which I should like to turn into a herb garden. But the shade is caused by a fir tree (species unknown) and the flower bed is showered with pine needles. Is there any point in trying to grow herbs in this area, or should I save my money.

I've generally found that my herbs prefer good sunlight, and not many plants will thrive under conifers, largely because the soil is very dry and dusty.

I would suggest that if this is the only space available, that you grow them in containers, but if at all possible, I'd grow them elsewhere.

Of course, if you're thinking of fairly large herbs, like rosemary, containers aren't as practical, but still possible.
