Was it generally a bad winter for passion flowers all 3 of my plants have died (2x3 and a 4 year old plant). The stems are brown when scraped and there is no sign of life from the base. They were also in different parts of the garden one on the front of the house, south facing and the other two intertwine in a beech hedge west facing.

Yes it was a hard winter for passion flowers, especially following the previous winter which was nearly as bad.
You just might get a few suckers come up from the roots, as they were well established.

But I would expect something to be showing by now

I thought I had lost a Passion Flower last year after the hard winter in January/February 2009. But late last summer, new growth appeared and it seemed to have survived. Then we had another, even harder winter and the Passion Flower disappeared without a trace. I'm not holding my breath for the same thing to happen again!
Maybe survival would be better if planted in a protected or South facing location? Mine got the sun from late morning, but it also was exposed to the wnds at times, which probably didn't help :(
