Scooby, With the Iris, cut out the flower stems and let the plant build up energy for next years flowering. The lilly, once it`s finished flowering, again, cut out the flowering stems, then let the plant grow on until it dies back. The 3rd plant is a Paeony, you can stake the flowers to keep them upright. Once they`ve finished, again, cut out the flower stems.:gnthb:

cool thanks for you info iris is sorted thanks, when you say cut out the flower stems on the lilly, do you mean just cut the dead heads off and leave the rest of the stems?.. also at any point towards the end off the year do cut them down to the ground? like the iris over the last few years the the leaves have wilted so i have cut them off is this right to do? many thanks :cnfs:

With the Lillies, yes, just dead head them. Sorry for not making it clear. With the Irises take out the flowered stems. Then let the plants die back naturally.

I keep a record too! I've got orange Lillies exactly the same as yours Scooby (and some white ones and some yellow ones too). I got them last August from a local garden centre, they were just finishing and it was about £1 for 10 pots of Lillies (each with 3 bulbs in it) - what a bargain. They have all grown well, except wher they are a bit shaded and where some have been partially eaten by caterpillars and 2 funny little red bugs (like ladybirds, but without the black dots). We also think we found some bug poo on the leaves - yuk, little brown blobs!

I didn't know what to do when they finished flowering. I now know. Thanks daitheplant!
