I have planted a 15 yr old Gleditzia which looks healthy with plenty of leaf growth. The bak though is splitting down the middle up to 10 ft and peeling to about one and a half inches . What is it and how do I stop it as Im afraid iwill die eventually.

One reason for bark splitting is irregular water supply. We have had some odd weather recently, very dry then pouring with rain. If the damage isn't too bad it will gradually heal itself, but one of the worries is that fungus infections will enter through the damaged bark.
There are various treatments used mainly in grafting trees to protect cuts in the bark, which could be used on your tree-here's one:

    Scroll down to 'wound protectant'
And of course crossing the fingers and praying is often effective! [IMG]

Since all the acacias come from notoriously dry parts of the world, it's surprising that lack of water would do this...... so surely it's likely to recover if you water it well?

The two people who know most about this type of tree are Pete and Strongy, and LoL has a bit of experience with them too. Let's hope they appear soon!

I've just googled gleditsia bark prob;ems, and got this... which doesn't look too promising

Compostmaker, did you move a 15yr old plant or was it pot grown, or whatever, what I mean is how did you come by this 15yr old tree.
    Is this split oozing sap?
If its not, at this time of the year, I would guess its not a real problem.
it may just be that the bark is starting to form the ridges that tree bark has, often young trees have a smooth bark.

Mamy thanks for your advice. I am going to see if I can persuade a friend to photograph it and put it on site so please watch out for\ it.
Last year I paid over £1000 for 4 tall mature trees from a reputable firm which give 12 mnths guarantee. I mention the price to show they were very large mature trees. I have nevber paid this amount for plants but I cant afford to wait 20 years for it to grow so I paid for mature plants which I can enjoy now. My goodness why not splurge once in your life!! Ive damn well worked hard enough!!
Unfortunately the Betula died( they guarantee it for 12 mnths so Im getting a replacement.
The Malus is healthy as is the Prunus Nigra. The Eucaliptus which is 15 ft high looks dead but has 3 new branches at the bottom. I dont knopw whether to ask for a replacement or to chop it down to the new growth and let it grow again ?

The Gleditzia looks totally healthy as far a leaf growth is concerned but the bark is peal;ing away. It is in one long horisontal line and peals back nearly 2 inch. It looks like there are 2 layers.
If it was lack of watering then why have the other 2 lived and why is the leaf growth so good.

I do appreciate your advice so if I can get a photo I will and hope I can save it. I cant see them sending me anther tree under guarantee.
