I have a few young trees out the backgarden two have red leafs, while the other two are palm tree types.

I need to raise the ground level around all these trees by about 750mm do I need to protect the trunk of these trees? or backfill around with anything special? I will be leaving most of the trunk above ground it is only the bottom bit. the trees are about 3m high approx. I do have a worry though about backfilling around them.

    Candgchambers,
Hi I ââ?¬Ë?m new here too. Iââ?¬â?¢ll take a shot at answering your question. In general I donââ?¬â?¢t know of too many species of trees that would like this. It seems that you want to raise the level by about 30ââ?¬Â (if my conversion is right) and that is too much. There are a few things you can do to minimize the damage this may cause. You could leave the area around the dripline (edge of the outside branches) open and build a stone well to keep out the dirt, or you could fill the dripline area with crushed stone (not as good as the first suggestion). The trees sound kind of big but transplanting them to the new ground level would also be an option. The problem with filling in around trees is that often times they donââ?¬â?¢t show signs of distress or die until several years after the fact.

These are just general suggestions, without knowing the type of tree and the lay of the land it would be hard to give exact advice.
