I have bought a cheap pear tree and a cheap apple tree from a bargain shop - 4.99 each. They don't have much soil around their root and I am not quite ready to plant them in the ground.
I also think it might be too cold to plant them outside.

Should I plant them in tubs until it is warmer and I have prepared the ground for them? Or will they last a week or two in the plastic bags they are wrapped in?

    Look forward to your wisdom.

Hi badsal72.Its strange but my best Cherry tree came from Woolworths in a sale,I have what i call my nursery bed,I usually put fruit trees ect.
Or any spare small space and plant them until I am ready to put them in the new place. It works for me.Please DON,T leave them in the plastic bags, take them out as soon as possible and give them a good soak for an hour or two anyway.Others may have other advice to offer you.
    Good luck.

Our local Lidl store had fruit trees for 4.99 when I was there on Thursday, thought about buying them but thought it might be to cold to plant them out as the roots looked pretty sparce.
Wish I had got some now hopefully they will have some left when I get round to going again.

Yes, Dalbuie. I got my apple and pear tree from 'instore' which in some towns is called 'bargainbuys'. But our Lidl has them in too. I got my cherry tree from there today. If they are half decent, I will be more than happy.

Dalbuie take care buying fruit trees from Lidl. I went to a nursery today and the owner said that he was tempted until he saw how small the rootball was, he said the tree wouldn't have survived. I'd give them a good coat of looking at and choose the biggest rootball there.

I think I will pot them up and put them in the unheated greenhouse until the soil is a little warmer, then the roots might have chance to grow a little before breaking into bud.

I did pot up my cheap trees. And yesterday they were planted in the ground. I staked them as the rootball on them is not very big and probably fragile.
The trees are starting to bud, I am hoping this cold weather puts a stop on that for a while so the rootball has a better chance of getting growing.

Has anybody else bought these trees?
