    Hi all

I'm hoping to plant some fruit trees, and intend to follow the instructions re spacing them apart.

But, I'm not clear if I can plant veg, flowers etc BETWEEN them....or do I have to leave bare soil/grass??

    Many thanks indeed,
    TC

We're in the same position at the moment and thinking about buying some fruit trees. From what I understand they need a circle of 18" radius around the trunk that has to be clear of vegetation. I suppose what you do in the other bits is up to you. But I'm positive somebody else will be able to advise you better.

I'd go with Celia on the 18" circle - less competition for the tree :D

We often plant bulbs to naturalise in that sort of area - not much competition, and it looks good :D

I agree with dendrobium. My in-laws-to be have daffodils and crocus under their apple tree. It looks looks fab in Spring.

I think the big no-no is grass around the trees. This is quite competitive, and remember the trees don't feed through their deep roots but from the shallow surface ones. Otherwise if there is cover that is not too competitive - so much the better.

I love my cyclamen under the old apple tree and as dendrobium says bulbs - a few snowdrops and crocus won't harm and if you don't plant anything well you will end up with weeds there.
