No picture I'm afraid, but any idea what the name of a fir tree is, which has branches coming out really straight...not pointing up, nor hanging down! Just straight out, and as someone else described it, looking like a tiered cake stand! Any ideas?

    Wuh?!

Sounds like a young Monkey Puzzle or possibly a Norfolk Island Pine. But some further identification like needle length, bark, size, habit - well ANYTHING would help!

    Please advise redfifi

I think I know what it is. If it's what I think it is it's one of the Araucaurias (not the Monkey Puzzle, A auracara, which I have, I think!) but the A heterophylla or Norfolk Island Pine.

They are very popular here ... read the article I have posted in Trees ... Trees of Turkey and Cyprus.

ok thanks folks, but don't think it is any of these suggested. I promise to go back to the place and take some photos and notes! Not this w'end tho'...partner and I are doing an experimental cycle.....50 miles to a site near a Loch in Sutherland camping overnight and returning next day! He's recently done 3 weeks of this in the French Alps, but I am a bit out of practice with my cycling....I only do my 2.2miles to work daily! We are thinking of a 6 month cycle round Australia Oct 2007 so will need all the practice I can get!! lol

Thanks FANCY. We had a slight change of plan....went over to Orkney instead..just one and a half hours crossing from Scrabster, but my first visit anyway. Absolutely loved it..weather was brilliant, we cycled about 65 miles in the 2 days. Saw crocosmia growing EVERYWHERE, and all the rowan trees laden with berries! Also saw my partners house he built there 16 years ago, sold it for £60,000 when he had to move away with his work. It has just gone on the market for £175,000! Shame he can't afford to buy it!!
    A very enjoyable w/end!
