Looks like a (holly) holm oak, a very very big evergreen specimen tree. Unless you have somewhere to put, eventually, such a large tree there is no reason to keep it other than not wanting to bin a living plant. [IMG]

Can make a nice evergreen hedge or bush if pruned Strongy, I've got one and as long as you dont let it get away from you its easily controlled. You can lop it hard back and it still breaks new buds.
I think its a bit underated. [IMG]

Looks like bay [laurus nobilis]to me. It would be very easy to tell by the smell, and the leaves are thick so that if bent they will crack rather than bend in half.

I agree with Pete - its an oak. I have a "Live" Oak from Florida, grown from an acorn - and the leaves are almost exactly the same.

Can't see the underside of any leaves, if oak, they should be paler than top side.

I would say that Bay leaves are longer and narrower and less toothed than these, but that may be age.

My daughter has a variety of bay which has toothed, slightly frilled leaves just like this. I didn't think it was bay at first, but one sniff convinced me!
Berry, get sniffing and put us out of our misery! [IMG] [IMG]

I am with Liz, [laurus nobilis], I have a small hedge of it. Looks like it wants to go back in the ground though. :D Be aware if left to it own devises it will become blinking huge needs to be hedged.

Yours could do with some grub water and looser soil if its to stay in the pot. I had one in a pot and they don't like their roots capped in a heavy JI3 mix. [IMG]

    Some pics of mine.
