Can anyone tell me what to do with Monkey Puzzle seeds. My tree has some magnificant cones which are just starting to split and fall. Some of the seeds look very thin but others are fat.
How should I store them and which do I keep.

Yes true Steve..I bought some on ebay last autumn , they need to be grown when fresh, 1st lot germinated very soon, second lot didn't, must have been too late. You live and learn lol but my seedling are good amongst all my jungle..

Found this one in a cematery.
I have read that the female cones grow on different trees to the male ones ie. trees are male or female, and you need both growing close together to get fertile seed. Not saying Pilchard that your seeds wont grow, just that unless there is a male tree in the area, there's a chance they may not be fertile.

Would it be worth trying any on ebay or might it be too risky not knowing if they are fertile. It just seems a pity with so many seeds at my disposal.

What have you got to lose, didn't mean to put you off sowing them, just thought a bit of extra info. wouldn't hurt.
If you really want another tree then it might be best to buy some seed, but if its just curiosity and you want to give them a try, then have a go.

I've got husband sorting out all the fat ones, with a beer in the other hand! It is surprising how few fat ones are in a pod but when you see an open pod you realise how well packed they are. I don't know if the thin ones are supposed to be like that or if they just haven't matured.Maybe that is why when you see them for sale they are in either 4s or 6s.

Pilchard... don't store them sow them now... peel the hard shell off carefully put fat end down, they germinate very quickly in a bit of warmth, use the nice firm ones first...I got some nice ones going from last year, not all germinated, as some were too old. Don't damage the actual Kernel, or it will set in the fungus and rot away. Put some on ebay, will buy them from you.
