    Hi all
may i say what a brill site this is, loads of useful tips and advise, as i previously said im a total beginner with gardening(and computers for that matter) can anyone advise me on my acer tree, it is approx 4 feet tall in a large pot, with lots of light but not a lot of direct sun, the edge of the leaves have begun to turn brown and dry, but there are new leaves growing further down the stem, any help would be appreciated

Mine is exactly as you describe...with the older leaves brown at the edges and the young new leaves a nice bright red colour

Its something that Acers get and you have to put up with to a certain extent...when the first leaves are breaking out its at a time when cold winds can burn them and cause the damage you describe...newer leaves coming through in warmer weather are mostly perfect

all you can do is try to make sure it is in a sheltered spot (out of drying winds) for spring time next year, this should help

    Hi Steve,
Yes I have exactly the same problem as you. My acer is a palmatum garnet and suffers from living on a balcony on the 7th floor overlooking the Thames and therefore gets its fair share of high winds you can see the burns in the photos attached. The advice I got if it gets really bad is to either move it to a sheltered spot (impossible for me) or shade it with some sort of screen which for me wouldn't really work and would stop me seeing it. I was told that it is a normal problem and you have to live with it.
If anyone out there thinks mine is suffering too much I'd like to know because its certainly got worse since I bought it.
