My beetroot, growing in a bed that last year held carrots has (i think) bolted, just like it did last year.

They've been in since early may/april, went in as plants rather than seed bought from stores.
I pulled a couple this afternoon, as they have grown rather larger than 2 foot, the stalks have gone partially green at their extremeties and the stalks are quite a lot taller than this gent's:

they also seem to have developed a taller central stalk with a pyramid shaped growth at the end with what look like seeds growing from them, something different to their standard leaves.

the bulbs are tiny, about the size of a thumb. their stalks are wide and large but the bulb is miniscule and won't really be worth boiling for food.

what am i doing wrong, anyone?

Try planting a bolt resistant variety such as 'Boltardy' I bought a pack of Carter's seeds for this variety for just 79p & have ended up with well over 150 plants, best of all it says on the pack that you can plant up until the middle of July, so if I was you I'd clear some space & get ready for a late harvest!

Yes, I just planted them directly outside in rows & thinned them out when they were large enough to handle.
