Hi there my name is Victoria and I'm new to this site. I need your help - I have a very special acorn seed taken from my daughters memorial tree in Nottingham - I placed it in compost with plenty of water and left it outside sometime ago. I've checked it today and thought ugh it's dead nothing has happened however i dug around to find the acorn had germinated - what do i do now? I have put it back in the same compost back outside but do i leave the little seedling exposed above the compost or do i leave it how it was underneath the surface?
Please help as it is a special little acorn and would hate to see it die.
    Victoria

I would put it back as near as possible exactly as it was, same depth, same place, with the compost loose around it - and keep you fingers well and truly crossed. Removing it may have caused it to check, so if as is forecast heavy rain happens, I would protect if from the worst of it so that it doesn't get waterlogged after its shock - but otherwise leave well alone.

It seems very late in the season for an acorn to germinate, usually by now they've either grown 6ins or rotted [IMG]

    Hi Victoria
Hope your acorn survives & makes a lovely big tree to carry your memories forward!
Not sure why you think Fran's reply was abrupt, though - its pretty sound, straightforward advice & I would go with it

    [IMG] Hi Victoria,
Don't be put off by Fran, it is good advice, but I know where you are coming from on how special this acorn is too you, beleive me. Sprinkle some of the compost back on top & make sure it doesn't dry out in the hot weather, &, as it is so special, & coming on so late, make sure you protect the pot from frost this winter. Hopefully it will come again next year in the Spring, strong & vigorous. [IMG]

Sorry Victoria, I didn't mean my message to sound abrupt, I know how important this is to you. My apologies if it caused any upset.

Thank you - it is very special mainly because the first oak that was planted in her memory died through storm damage so this little acorn will hopefully grow well. i've covered it back over again but i've taken it out of the rain and it's now in the utility room - will put it back out tomorrow. thanks again x

Hi Victoria - I managed to grow an acorn to about 15" and was really pleased but transplanted it and it died. So do take care when it grows and don't transplant too soon. (Mine was a very special one too).Best of luck with your acorn. [IMG]

    [IMG] Hi Victoria,
jjordi has made a good point, grow it on in a pot until a good root system is established, it may take a couple of years but don't plant it out until it is at least 3' tall, then it should have the strength to get going in the ground, Precious trees take allot of love sometimes.... ;) Oh & don't forget to feed it once it has got going [IMG]
