i bought 2 acer palmatum trees last year which i have in pots on my deck. i was under the impression that they had a spreading habit but over the last 6 months the branches have turned sharply upwards and are now growing in a complete vertical. is this normal or is something wrong. what can i do to sort them.

Any chance of a pic and do you have the cultivar name?

There are a lot of A. palmatum varieties with differing habit and colour, some are also grafted onto quite ordinary rootstock - it's possible the graft has failed and you are getting branches from below the node.

    Glad it worked ;)

Going by the pic this looks like a case of light starvation which is why the branches are turning upwards to reach the light and you need to get it away from the dark fence. Weighting branches might encourage it back to a more natural shape as well.

    Any other suggestions?

would it be worth pruning some of the branches back a bit once you've moved it, so the fresh growth grows in the usual way? Just a suggestion!
