I wonder if anyone can help. I need to plant a big tree at the bottom of the garden. How big is the hole needed generally? And how big for a fir tree about 20 feet tall? Also any good tree merchants in South East? Also any ideas of cost? And how much would they charge to plant it?

A big hole and a big hole in your wallet too. We were looking at a tree yesterday, not that big and it was £349, so add double that to plant it!

Not always the bes plan to go for a mature tree, sometimes a smaller tree catches up because it has not had so much growth disturbance.

why do you need such a big tree?

We have a "captain of industry" just thrown a load of money - I mean MEGGA! as much as average house, on hedging - ***** knows what he is going to do behind it all. BUT what a job he is having to keep it all alive.

Beech on one side, hawthorn on the other, then prunus for good measure, interp;anted with cotoniaster and rugosa rose and all mature plants with irrigation system that would supply Africa!

AND then this ridiculous - what I call "coconut matting" for screaning.

I am sure he could have had better advice.

a COMPANY CALLED LANDFORD TREES, BASED AT LYMINGTON IN HAMPSHIRE DO HAVE THE SORT OF THINGS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, GIVE THEM A RING AND TELL THEM WHAT WHERE AND WHY AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU THERE ADVICE, BUT AS OTHERS HAVE SAID...LOADS OF DOSH FOR A LARGE CONIFER.
YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER NOT ONLY THE HIEGHT, BUT THE SIZE OF THE ROOT BALL, AND HOW IT IS GOING TO BE DELIVERED..ie A FLAT BED TRAILER AT LEAST 25' LONG, A CRANE TO LIFT IT OFF..THE LIST GOES ON...

I came across a site where you can get fairly mature trees, (in my case a willow) and it didn't cost the earth. I can dig out the details if you're interested. It was delivered very well wrapped, bare-root. Trouble is, you probably would have to wait until the dormant season again to get it, although you could order it now. That goes for all bare-root plants, btw. ;)

A good place to contact is Pantiles at Lyne nr. Chertsey Tel. 01932 874030. They do all sorts of mature trees although they can be very expensive. I once lived next door to a guy who wanted his privacy so badly the he planted 10 such trees of which only 2 survived.

Small trees can grow very quickly incl. some conifers and e.g. Eucalyptus, etc....
