I've just moved and in the garden was a lovely shrub, planted in a 12" pot. I left it grow to see what happened and, last week, the little white flowers came out. Can anyone tell me what it is and would it do better planted in the ground. Thanks

Looks like Deutzia and definitely better in the ground but if you plant it now it will need regular watering for a few weeks or leave it the pot till the Autumn .:)

I disagree with Deutzia, I think it`s Philadelphus "Virginal ".:gnthb:

Philadelphus smells lovely. Not sure about Deutzia - I have never grown it - does it have a fragrance?

The leaves and flowers look like Philadelphus.

I would say it was Philadephus (probably virginalus).
If so, it will definitely do better in the ground.
As a shrub it can get up to about 8 feet, but can be kept to about 4 feet no problem.
It will not do its best in a pot.
It has a lovely scent reminiscent of orange and looks great in a vase with roses.

Apropo of nothing - at the moment I am listening to pesky peacocks screaming their heads off. Hope it's not going on all night or I'll be getting the ovens warmed up - one for him and one for her.
Anybody who feels sympathetic can come and get those beauties and take them far away from here. I'll help you to catch them.

Thanks for your answers so far.... i know the majority opinion seems to be Philadelphus Virginalis but I'm leaning more towards the suggestion of Deutzia as the flowers are small on my shrub whereas Philly Virg seem larger. I 'll check it out but please keep any suggestions coming. Thanks a lot

Barry - there are loads of different Philadelphus some with big flowers and some with small. Its called the Mock Orange, which is a fair description of its lovely scent. I think most varieties smell similar.

    Does it have a scent?

Barry, forget the size of the flowers, the leaves or the plant. It is in a pot, therefore, what you basically have is a bonsai`ed Philadelphus.:gnthb: Plant it in the ground and enjoy.:thumb:
