If it's your fence do what you want ..but if it's his leave well alone.

If its his fence have a chat with him about what you would like to do - but if he says no, then as Pal says leave well alone.

My neighbours did their own thing in both sinking their drive, causing my old decrepit fence to fail, and then painted the fence I put up to replace it. If they had asked I would have agreed, the fact that they as usual did not even show that courtesy - teed me off.

As far as I am aware you are not allowed to...

    1) paint or stain your neighbours fence

    2) grow plants of any description up your neighbours fence

    3) attach anything whatever to your neighbours fence

No harm in asking, but ultimately you have no rights.

    Edited to say...

If the fence belongs to both of you it is down to the person who owns the boundary rather than the physical fence. If it was joint effort its not really appropriate to talk about 'rights'. I would strongly advise against doing things on the grounds of rights, best ask and be prepared to be told no.

Before I moved into our current house my neighbour put up a new fence on my boundary because the previous owners were too lazy to erect a new one. When I bought the house, I own the boundary and the fence on it, even though they paid for it to be supplied and fitted. When replacing the panels I treated both sides for weathering as ultimately I would buy the next one and want it to last as long as possible.

Shared boundaries, weird. Then go by whats in your deeds, but its always good to be friendly and negotiate.

Try this website, I have consulted it before for other bits and bobs.
