    Hi all,
on my concrete shed there's a half moon gutter. Currently it serves no purpose whatsoever, as the water just runs off the ends  I'd like to install a water butt to collect the water.
I'm presuming I just cap one end of the gutter and then add some downpipe into the water butt???? Somehow????

Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to do this? Pleeeeease!!! [IMG]

    Hi Windy ,

    Its not that difficult really!

You are going to need a couple of bits as you say, such as a downpipe connector , some downpipe, and some blanks for the end of the guttering. As for the water butt, cheapest option would be a black plastic dustbin and lid, with a hole cut in it to take the downpipe.

However, if the water is already "just running off the ends " and you have the space, then just place the black dustbin in the right place to catch the water !

Fill your watering can by immersing it in the bin ?

Add a couple of lumps of charcoal / coal to keep the water smelling nice , and you're away.

If like me you are on a water meter, this will be a considerable cost saving

Think the problem I 'm going to have is with too much rain and not a big enough bin to hold it  Roll on Summer...... :D

If you are going down the route of installing a down pipe etc. try looking around your local industrial estate or food factory. lots of these use large barrels to store liquids in and are often glad of someone to take them away. just make sure it hasn't been used for anything toxic!!!!
I did this recently and found the barrel i'd sourced had a screw opening on the top. this was a perfect fit for the downpipe to be pushed into. I then put the barrel onto a couple of breeze blocks to lift it off the ground and fitted a tap, which is just a simple job of drilling the hole and tightening a nut. Taps in the garden centres appeared expensive, I got mine off ebay for a quid from a homebrew supplier.
hope this is of help and good luck!

.... or nip to your local tip. Our local one had LOADS of 2nd hand butts for sales for next to nothing when I went down there a couple of weeks ago!!!! If you smile nicely, you may get one free!!! [IMG]
.... and to install it, erm, pick out a fella who you have had your eye on, and ask very sweetly him how to fit one whilst batting your eye-lids and he may offer to do it for you!!!! :D :D [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
