Is it ok to use same trench for sweet peas as last yr.? Normally throw compost and household peelings into trench, up to March time.I had a lovely show last yr. with no major problems.Greenfly only appeared at end of season. Can anyone suggest an eary flowering sweet pea, as not been able to do an autumn sowing.Thank you.Friday

Hi friday. I planted "Giant Wavy Mixed" and "Cupani" 2 weeks ago and they're both in the seedling stage now. There was a thread about this a little while ago and I just followed the instructions there. Never tried sowing in Jan. before but it seems to work [IMG]

Hi all I have just planted 3 varieties Terry Wogan, Charlies Angel & Sweet Chariot.

Earlier autumn plantings will usually produce stronger growth & earlier flowering but there are some funny things happening in nature at the moment (I have a Rhododendron out & Daffs before Xmas!)

As with all legumes I find it best to plant in fresh ground with plenty of compost, they don't like to dry out so the more humus the better.

Sowing in succession will also increase the length of cutting season, long root trainers are not essential in my view just try not to disturb the roots too much when transplanting.

    Hope this helps?

    Cheers

    Tim

Thank you all for suggestions re sweet peas.I will sow some early type and grow then on in a cold frame. Will also try inner toilet rolls instead of buying 'root trainers'to sow single seeds. How do other growers train their flowers. On willow tripods like Monty Don or accross a 6' trellis of bamboo stix? I have no willow stix but could use bamboo.
