Seeds I have sown today

    [​IMG] Hi BM,
    I was unsure when sowing mine, what to do & asked a friend how he did his..
    This is what I did.....
    1. Soaked the seeds in water for 48hrs... Two sank so I made a note on my plant sticks which ones sank..

    2. Sowed them in 3" square pots in seed compost & put them in the heated propagater in the conservatory. I was told 1-6 months for germination. Not to exclude light as it helps germination. Keep the temp constant around 65-75deg.. I also put an angle poise lamp over them at night with one of those energy saving flourescent bulbs in to the equiv' of 100watts. This is supposed to make a big difference as the 24hr light triggers something in them...!! [​IMG] Maybe that is the secret.. Not sure...

    3. Do not let the compost dry out..

    Two of mine germinated within about a month I think & guess what.... They were the seeds that sank..!!! [​IMG] I left the other two untill the end of the summer, but nothing happened to them.. I was told that if the seeds sank they would germinate.. Floaters may not or my be weak plants... I am not sure about this except that, as I said, the 2 of mine that did germinate, did sink...!! [​IMG]

    ;) Apparently, so I am told, it is a good idea to soak any kind of bulbous seeds that you want to sow.. I shall certainly try it... I always pre-soaked all my Peas & Beans seeds before sowing them when I had the veg garden & of course any legume type seeds.. [​IMG]

    I recon those that sank absorbed water. I think I will graze one as when I do canna seeds it gets them germinating quicker. I will point wahaj towards this post as it will be very useful, Thanks MF :D I am going to get my canna seeds going too, get the most out of heating the propagator [​IMG]

    and yea i'll be popping mine into my heated propagator i got given for xmas lol. thanks again!

    That's got me thinking, BM - I got some canna seds from LoL - must get them started too!

    I've printed off that set of instructions on ensete sowing, MF, and will try it out. When I was first doing sweet peas, the advice was to soak the seeds overnight, and reject those that didn't sink. Almost all of the others cmae up well, although one set, all of one cultivar, didn't. Never knew why..... they were all treated exactly the same!

    Will report back on success or lack of it, in due course...

    [​IMG] Yes have a go dendy.. It should work fine for them as BM says.. Worked for me.. [​IMG] Yes, I always soak sweetpeas... They take long enough to germinate anyway most times so a helping hand doesn't go amiss I think, I always grazed the sweetpeas too. Didn't think of doing that on the ensete.. :rolleyes:

    interesting what you say about sweet peas marley farley. i take cell trays and fill them with multi purpose compost. moisten the soil and push the seeds in about a cm into the soil. normally within a week they all germinate.

    i sowed about 20 seeds in october, and every single one germinated without any special treatment. and i've sown about 30 odd seeds of different varieties and every single one germinate this week.

    [​IMG] Hmmmm, :D What can I say wahaj.. [​IMG] I have grazed them & soaked them for many years now & have a very good success rate.. I know I started doing it after finding they took a long time to germinate when I pushed them un-soaked, into moist compost as you do... I wasn't giving them any heat in those days though, so maybe that is why they took so long.. :confused: Perhaps I will try some each way this year & see if they are any different or how much faster one way is, than the other....! :D As time has gone by & have talked to many people & it is suprising how many people do soak seeds & those who don't.. Seems at least about 50/50... :D [​IMG]

    Today I sowed some Half Hardy Annual Geranium seeds.Maverick Star F1 Hybrid,And Horizon Coral Spice.Put them in a propagator on the window sill.My first time of trying,After reading the thread on our site,thought I would give it a go.

    to be honest i do think MF that it's down to the quality of seeds you get. all the seeds i've sweet pea seeds i have sown that have had 100% germination were all from a cheapo wilkinsons pack of sweet peas.

    yet lavender, which is normally pretty easy to sow, i couldn't manage it in 2 different sowings from a thompson and morgan packet.

    maybe it really does depend on the batch of seeds?

    oh and i didn't give any heat to mine either. just on the window sill on a covered seed tray that lets light in.

    The quality of the seed is the #1 factor.. I have had some excellent results from what we tend to look upon as cheapo seeds :D , & my problems with your branded kinds, like T&M etc.. :rolleyes: I don't know why, but me & sweetpeas just don't always get on too well. Yet I just love them..!!! [​IMG] :rolleyes:

    I have sown some Onion seeds this afternoon,and have put them in the airing cupboard.The variety is The Kelsae,so will see how they grow.Also put my Tender and True parsnip seeds on top of the boiler in the kitchen in a container of water to aid germination. [​IMG]

    Datura Ballerina tutu sown last week and I wish I hadn't as they are already long and lanky looking for more light.
