Looked in on the pool this morning as usual to find my biggest koi on it's back .On the bottom of the pond.
I have had it over 10 years and it's a whopper at least 18 inches long.
It seems to be bloated with red marks on it's underneath.
I have taken it out of the big pool and put it into the smaller one.
But I think it is dead.
I have noticed it lying on the bottom of the pond for a few days , right way up , but I just thought it was the cold weather.
    The other fish seem O.K.
Any idea what it might be.

You might no why my 13 year old cross spaniel is eating herself.
She chews her feet until she can hardly walk.
We have been to many vets tried everything they have advised from steroids to diet creams to foot wash.
Today her one foot is really sore .
She just will not stop it.
Her collar is back on now to stop her but she hates it and goes mad with it on.
I'm not having much luck today with our pets. :(

She may have an allergy or it may be a behavioural/nervous thing.

To come at it from a different direction, you can buy little boots for dogs which may reduce the amount of damage she does to herself.

Though I'd ask the vet if they would advise it.

No , there were no ulcers on the koi.
I'll post a photo if your not squeamish.
I took them so to zoom in to try and see what was wrong .
The damage to it's right side was done when I took it out of the pool dead, the scales just fell off.

We have used the boots on the dog she eats them as well.

Sorry to here this Lyn,it does happen from time to time.
I have lost a couple of beauties over the years, reason unknown......perhaps just old age,we can't ask them and have very little to go on.You always wonder will they pass it on to the others, but in my experience this rarely happens.

I had one large Koi that threw his self out of the pond while we were out,by the time we got home he looked dead.....I worked on him for a while, pressing his body....and gradualy he came back to life.....like a miracle.............but he did die a year later.
They do say and I believe this to be true, when they die bury them under one of your favourite shrubs, and they will thrive (the shrub that is)........all that goodness.....blood FISH and bone.
So they do not die in vain.

Sorry to hear about your Koi Lyn he must have been a truly remarkable fish to see swimming around in your pond and after having him for ten years you must be pretty upset to see him go.

I hope Roder's is right and that it's just one of those things, it wouldn't be nice for you to loose anymore so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you girl. [IMG] Helen.xxx.

Maybe it's poisoned Lyn with this weather the fish have not been able to go into dormancy properly 2 weeks ago mine were scavaging wanting to be fed but you have to resist, there is a chance that undigested food in its stomach as decomposed and poisoned it, as you know they will eat anything so something could have fallen in the pond and been eaten, mine have been eating frogs so maybe it's had one of these, if you can get someone to look in its stomach see if there is anything.

Yes the weather may have something to do with it.
It's been very up and down here with frosty cold mornings and mild afternoons.
There is plenty in the pond if they want to eat.
I have done a full water test and thats all normal.
Must be just one of those things.
    Sad but there you go.

The problem with your dog sounds like an inseceurity/ alergy thing. We had a stray cat with a bare patch on his chest caused by continuse scratching and worying. A dose of frontline and a lot of petting and atention and in a month his fir had reegrown.

cant help with the fish but went to the vets with my lab chewing its feet till he couldnt walk. wife booked vets and i thought it was going to be a waste of time , did test and found out he was getting a reaction to pollen and grass seeds, gave me some special shampoo called malaseb i just rub it in to his feet twice a week and it works a treat, ;)
