I am intrigued by the lump of charcoal method but does it work ? My water butts are full of mozzy larvae and plenty of mozzies = plenty of bites. I dont want to resort to chemicals so i will give this a go. watch this space !

Years ago when we just had a smallish pond we used charcol too and it did work. We just gathered the bigger left-over bits from our fireplace.

I guess a fine mesh, like mosquito netting or even old net curtains, could be put over the top of the water butt to prevent any animals, birds or leaves from fallig in. It could be attached to a wooden frame for easy removal.

We only burn wood and this is the charcoal that we have used in the past.
