Excellent photos - I've never seen a mangold plant before. The picture of the bridge with the crocuses next to it is lovely, and it looks like a gorgeous crisp winter's day.

A very forlorn lot of shuttlecock ferns, but I had a feeling they're deciduous anyway, so hopefully they'll bounce back in the spring.

Thanks Julia. Here is a link for the mangold, or chard as I now see.

I didn't know what these ferns were called, but have made a note now. They reappear every year in the Schloss Garden. I might see if I can buy a clump as they are pretty and I love ferns. A frond or two would look nice in an autumn or winter arrangement as well as in the garden.

The ferns are on the far side of the bridge on the left-hand side.

Very interesting - I like vegetables that look pretty in the ground as well as on the plate!

Crocus has a brief description of them, and the price is what I'd consider good value, for their size, but I don't know if they deliver to Germany, or if they'd be too happy after the journey.

I can see them now in the bridge photo - they'll look lovely when they're back in full frond! And as Crocus advises, they're most effective planted in groups near water, which is exactly what they've done at Schloss Garden isn't it?

I found that link too when I was googling your shuttelcock name. I also found some German links, but after having so much bad luck with mail-order plants, I've given up and only buy what I can see. Thanks all the same.

There are a lot of garden centers and also nurseries up in our area, so I'm sure that I will be able to find one somewhere.

Next time, I'll get a photo showing them and the little stream running under the bridge.

Thanks Kathy, and it is beautiful in the summer. I'll have to go and take some pics then too to show you all just how lovely it is.

At the moment, major work is being done on the greenhouse there, it was always nice in there too. There is even a sort of cave thing with aquariums, quite interesting.

    Very nice photos Kedi-Gato

I think the ferns are called Shuttlecock Ferns (Matteuccia struthiopteris) as I was weeding round them in October at RBGE. The brown fronds are the fertile spore bearing ones which appear in late autumn/early spring where as in summer they produce green sterile fronds.

    Nice one Kedi,

I like ferns too. Lost my collection when we moved, but have managed to pot up a few Hearts tongue ferns from the building site.

Tell me there is a Garden Centre in Baden Baden. I've always pictured one 0)

Thanks everyone. Must visit there again, just the parking is a bit of a problem, so I prefer to go to the Botanical Garden in town.

Wildf - I've googled the Marzahn Gardens and they are beautiful. If we ever get back to Berlin on a visit, I'll make a point of going there. Thanks for the tip.

"Tell me there is a Garden Centre in Baden Baden. I've always pictured one" - why, Ziggy?
