i have just filled a big tall pot (33cm in diameter) with compost (pebbles at bottom for drainage) and sown two rows of carrots in it. I got the idea from a gardeneing programme, and it produced excellent carrots. I am going to do another lot next month for a staggered supply. thought it would be a good idea for people who have stoney soil like me!

    Hi GG,
There are special varieties you can get for growing in pots. They form shorter roots than normal. Can't think of the ones I get though for the moment.

I've been growing carrots in a trough for a few years now - very successfully. If you raise it up a little you can thwart the carrot root fly, which doesn't fly higher than about a foot, and growing in compost means there's nothing to make the roots grow wonkily. Much less in the way of slug damage, too, depending on where you put the pot or trough.

I'm growing Nantes, I think, which can be sown repeatedly over a very long season. They are on the short side of normal, I would say - certainly none of them have reached the bottom of the trough. Very tasty, too.

Good idea Geranium! Raising the pot/trough that is to avoid the pesky root fly:axe:. Another gem from GC!
