Hi I am after a bit of advice re Lupins and Delphiniums they have both just about finished flowering . Should I cut back the plants if so how much and when. Do I just cut the flowering stems. Will I get a seceond flush of flowers?

    Thanks for any advice

 Hi Patl, this is my way of thinking... In the first year of flowering I never let them set seed, I remove the flower heads as soon as they are finished..
Then after flowering I feed them for the rest of the year to become strong plants for the following years to come.. Often in their first year if the flowrs are small & weak looking I just remove them straight away as I don't want to weaken the plants.. So I would remove all spent slower heads as they come & then feed a high nitrogen food for a couple of months to get good root growth.. :thumb:

Thanks for the reply. The delphiniums are now actually in their second year and were a lot better and stronger than the previous year. As these are in the second year would you do anything different?

    Thanks

If they are in their 2nd year then Pat I would just dead head at present & keep watered then & you may get a 2nd flush of flowers.. If not then just give them a feed at some point before they start dying back in readiness for next years growth then..

My Dad has instructed me to cut them down to 1 foot, then they regrow and come again.

Not sure whether I will actually do this, or just dead head. I dead head my lupins and they flowered all summer last year.
