I'm going to try some trailing-type tomatoes in hanging baskets this year and am wondering if there are any companion plants ( things like petunia, trailing lobelia) which might taint the the crop by being grown in such close proximity and in a confined growing area if they are not, themselves, edible.

I am growing gartenperle tomatoes on baskets this year and was intending to companion plant with basil.

If you are growing other plants in the same pot, the tomatoes will have to share nutrients with the other plants. Also, baskets dry out quickly so attention to watering is important. If you want healthy high cropping tom plants, don't over fill the baskets.

    Thanks for these replies.
I am going to try gartenperle and also tumbling tom varieties.
I was just a little concerned that some container plants might be poisonous and, possibly, unsuitable to grow in the same basket where roots mingle closely with an edible crop.
Perhaps it's best to stick to edible ornamentals like nasturtium, marigold and pansies as companion plants.
