Hi, over the past few years I have been growing veg, but due to lack of room I only grow them in the small garden trough you can buy, I have grown spring onions and radish, and I have been sucessful with these, however can anyone suggest any other veg I can grow in these garden troughs other than Spring onions and Radish, the troughs I have are about 3 feet long, about 6 inch wide and about 6 inch deep.

    Regards Keith

    hi there

i too have a small garden and last yr managed to grow

    peppers
    chillis
    toms
    spuds
    radish
    spring onions
    peas
    runner beans
    cucumber
    sprouts
    turnips
    carrots

these were all grown in pots i used polypots and put them round the garden in the borders the troughs you have ar'nt very deep so you need veg thats not deep rooted

you can get round carrots with not much root for growing in pots also turnips don't have much root so they would be ok too,

as for other stuff i think you might need deeper pots but you could always give it a go !

someone will be along to advise you more but hope that helps a little for now ;)

Don't think you'll get potatoes or runner beans out of a container that size Keith, but how about dwarf french beans or peppers??

Also you should be able to grow some 'baby' veg, ie just harvest them before they are full size: beetroot, fennel, leeks etc.

I've got some containers the same size, four strawberry plants in each and they're doing pretty well.

    Nick.

I don`t see why you can`t grow cabbage and cauliflower and beetroot, lettuce, onions. As long as the pots/troughs are deep enough you can grow anything in your garden.

Why not just buy some cheap plastic buckets and make drainage holes in the bottoms. I've just bought some from Wilcos at 69p each for my early potatoes, last season I used buckets for some late potatoes and we've just finished eating those. Growbags are no more than 6" deep and you can grow all sorts in those. Plant tomato plants in 6" pots with the bottoms cut out and put the pots in growbags, works a treat. The only problem with a shallow growing medium is controlling the watering, on a hot Summers day, they will dry out in a matter of hours, this checks the plants growth and it will not recover fully, resulting in slow stunted growth.
