Years Old Doggie Toilet discovered in new veggie patch

sorry to start on such a bizarre subject, I have just extended my veggie patch and found a disused dog toilet under ground, it's been out of use for 7 years at least as we moved in 7 years ago, there was just brown water in in, no smell and I wondered if anyone had any idea whether it was safe to carry on with planting veggies in it or had any ideas of what to do to make it safe

Are you sure it's a doggie loo Fi? I reckon you are pretty safe whatever if it's at least 7 years. I never heard of a dog cess-pit.

 

It was basically a bucket, and the previous owners did have a dog. I think it's something that is used, ie they let their dog go in the garden, and then it gets buried basically.

I had a quick look on google, and found something about how some of the potentially harmful eggs you can find in dog waste can survive for up to 10 years.

So I guess I'm just trying to get a consensus on whether that's something that should be absolutely adhered to, or whether that's so unlikely to still really be an issue after seven years.

 

Dig it out and forget about it would be my approach

 

Id just make sure that any veg etc is thorughly washed and the same for your hands.

Id also be tempted to dig some lime into the toilet area.

 

I`d would treat the area with Jeyes Fluid or Armillatox before doing anything else.

 

If there are dog eggs that can last for 10 years I would follow David's advice with Jeyes' Fluid. After all you don't want lot's of puppies do you?

7 years is a long time, I imagine all number 2's will have turned to compost over that time.
