tomatoes

hi can any one help me .my tomatoes in greenhouse have gone black only on the bottom quarter. it only happens when the fruit starts to rippen hope someone can help thanks monty

 

Its called "blossom end rot" monty.
I think its usually put down to erratic watering when the fruit is setting, letting the plants get just a bit too dry between waterings, it only shows up as the toms get bigger.

 

You are soooooooooooo lucky to have some tomatoes Monty. Everyone here has lost their plants - even in their greenhouse/polytunnels - because of the blight. There's not a plant to be seen either in my village or in the surrounding villages. My neighbour was complaining yesterday that it is the first time in OVER TWENTY YEARS (!) that he has had to buy a tomato. His first spuds have gone too, although he is waiting to see if the spuds are edible (he cut off all the foliage and left the tubers in the ground).

I think everyone will be buying their toms on the black market this year. :eek:

Same thing has happenned to the larger varieties of my toms - the smaller ones in the greenhouse are ok so far.
But the outside lot are in pots and nearly all are dead/dying.

At least we can all have another go next year....

 

Yes, i picked off 3 yesterday due to blossom end rot.They are gardeners delight.The beef tomatoes seem to be ok so far. xx

Your problem does sound like Blossom End Rot. Current opinion puts it down to a lack of calcium as the fruit is forming, most common when growing by the Ring Culture method. Add a spoonful of garden lime to the soil about a fortnight after planting out and then about every two to three weeks until the first two or three trusses have formed. It usually only affects the first couple of trusses. The fruit is still edible, leave to ripen normally and just cut out the manky bit, you can fry or grill the remainder. Check it out with Google.
