Firstly hi, I'm compleatly clueless when it comes to gardening so have come here with a plea for help. My Mum has recently got into gardening and is about to reach 60 so I want to get a special gift. Any ideas on what I could get her? Budget is around 100. Needs to be something that will last a long time.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi & [IMG].. I think you need to give us a tad more info here.. What sort of plants or trees do you know your Mother likes, how big is her garden & hereabouts is the garden as some plants do better than others in different areas.. A couple of trees I have bought for special people were a Crabapple Evereste & a Winter Flowering Cherry Autmnalis.. Both very attractive trees & long lasting.. :thumb:

What about some roses. David Austin has a great site and does roses in containers. There are some gorgeously scented roses. he suggests planting in groups of three for impact. I have this one and it is just gorgeous.

The thing about container roses is they can be delivered straight away. The other roption is bare root but you won't get those until December and they don't look so good. They will be in flower in containers at the moment. Really well packaged and presented.
You could buy her a really good gardening bible too.

Thanks for the tips so far. Only more info I can give is the garden is pretty big (very rough guess 30m-40m square). She grows various flowers, trees, plants, fruit and veg.

The Winter Flowering Cherry Autmnalis looks quite nice. Are these quite special in the gardening world then?

Rose tree could be nice too. They seem a bit cheap in price though? I'm looking and it says +1 = 10.95 and +5 = 10.25. (what's the +1 +5 for?) Is there not really such a thing as a high quality tree that costs much more? or maybe I should get a few but then it doesn't seem so special. I sort of want 1 really amazing tree that will be very special.

Not that it HAS to be a tree, it could be a statue or piece of furniture etc

Hi- I wouldn't give a tree for a 60th birthday, but if you really want to go for a plant, something small and cheerful, which doesn't need a lot of care and is resistant.

we gave my mother-in-law free entry to Barnsdale and she loves it - she can go along any time and see what they are up to and they run courses that she's finding useful too... wonder if there's a garden like that near you?

My mum loves her garden but perseveres with growing things from cuttings etc, so starts small and has to be patient.

She turned 70 last year, and as her present I took her to a lovely nursery and she chose some things she really wanted but could not ever afford under normal circumstances. It really is a lovely treat because they get the fun of walking round and deciding what they'd like.

My mum chose a magnolia and a philadelphus. She loved it so much we have just done it again for this years birthday - on a more restricted budget!
