Can I combine veg and flowers?

I have a big empty plot at the back of the garden, between the little used greenhouse and the spider web infested shed. About 6ft across and 10 ft long. I have recently planted some various small flower bushes, not sure what they are called, they have pink flowers and green ruffly leaves that sometimes are stripey and smell wonderful. I've planted those and some parsley along the greenhouse wall but have plenty of space leftover...

Would it be ok to try some potatoes in there as well? Or should I just stich with flowers? I already have mint, rosemary and something chivey elsewhere in the garden so I'd like to try some veg like potatoes and onions in this spot.

Is this a disaster waiting to happen or worth a try?

The old fashioned cottage gardens always had the vegetables mixed in with the flowers. It is a bit late for potatoes this year, but no reason why you should not put in some cabbages, sprouts, broccoli. You may even get away with a sowing of peas (dwarf ones now).

There's no reason why you can't grow flowers and veg. together. Edging veg. plots with companion plants to keep insect pests at bay is well-known.
There are some plants which don't seem to go well together but in general plant what you want where you want it!

    Oh, wonderful! Thanks [IMG]

Where is the best place to find veggies to plant? Should I try our local allotment shop, a garden centre or is there a better place? And do I need actual seeds or just seed plants?

Try the Allotment shop first, the quality would probably be higher and the prices lower. If not then a Garden centre. Have a look at the seed packets, there are lots of things you can sow outside now. Saladings (lettuce, radish etc) can be sown every few weeks for a continued supply.
