Runner Beans

    I have planted out my runner beans from pots and about 4 have had some of the leaf eaten and look worst for wear just wondering whether it is too late to plant some more or shall i keep watering to see if they come up.

    Sounds like slug damage. If you've only lost a few leaves or bits of leaf there is a good chance that the beans will continue to grow. There is still time to sow a few more though. You could sow them beside your half eaten ones and if you find you don't need them can always pull them up.

    Sometimes they will grow again even if they have been chomped right down to the surface of the soil. Of course it puts things back weeks, though, with the resulting reduction of the crop.

    Re runner beans: I planted some a couple of weeks ago soaked them 1st they are up and going great guns now are you supposed to pinch out the tops like the sweet peas? I have never grown them before.

    I plant them out and leave them until they get to the top of the supporting cane, then pinch the tops to encourage growth lower down. [​IMG]

    Thanks Liz I will try that. Oh and by the way can't remember but was it you who helped me purchase the Goose berry bushes? from Ireland.

    Yes, it was me who found the Irish site- I hope they are OK. I haven't bought gooseberries yet, I' m looking for recommendations myself, did Golden Drop live up to its name?
    My golden hop from you has taken off now, lovely colour, thanks ver y much!

    After a bad start of the slugs feasting on the young leaves, I put slug pellets down, and now they are doing well.

    Kedi, they look very good to me and healthy too.you should get a good yield.
