    Hi All,

Not ready for my own veggie questions yet as my veg patch is still under construction, but asking on behalf of a friend of mine who's having trouble with his courgettes. They were growing fine until a week or so ago, planted in the ground, but since then he has noticed that the flowers have started to shrivel and close up and the plant is looking a bit sickly. :(

Should he be concerned or will it be bucking up again soon? I suggested it may need more water (but it has been bucketing it down around here lately), but I'm afraid I'm not up to much with veggies yet. Any advice is appreciated! [IMG]

    Cheers,

    Dave

Hello Dave,I`ve not grown courgettes before but it sounds like they`ve just had a bit of a batterring from the heavy rain.
I can`t find anything specific relating to the shrivvelled flowers.the only thing is on pollination and giving a helping hand.

It's been a bit chilly too, even frost in some places and that cannot help them.

Thanks for the replies everyone - I will tell him to keep his eye on things, but I don't feel as worried any more! [IMG]

My courgettes are planted in a large metal dustbin, and don't seem to be doing too well. I think the area is much too shaded. I'm thinking about moving them into the sun instead.

IIRC the flowers do close up and kind of shrivel a little bit normally, as the courgettes grow, don't they?

if the end of the courgette has become soggy and mouldy, it is either the effect of frost or too much moisture. Tell your chum to only water around the base of the plant. Any curcubita should be treated likewise, they should never be watered rom above all over the foliage. And in the very unlikely event of frost, protect with fleece etc.
