A friend of mine when planting his Tomatoes in grow bags cuts the top couple of inches of a plant pot and places it around the plant. He says it lets him water them better. I've never seen this before and wondered if anyone else does the same and if it makes a differance. [IMG]

I've got my tomato plants in grow bags with just 3 circles cut out of the plastic and 1 plant planted within each circles. They are only little at the moment so aren't drinking a lot, but they are quite difficult to water. If you use the rose on the watering can the water goes everywhere but in the holes of the grow bags, and if you take the rose off the heavy stream of water disrupts the compost and it comes pouring out of the holes and all over the floor along with a lot of the water!! The plant pot collars would solve this. Great idea!

I grew some tomtoes in grow bags last year and did a similar thing by 'planting' the little flowerpots they came in alongside the plants. It worked very well as I could fill each one and allow it to drain into the compost. Gonna try an irrigation system made out of a drip tube from work - planning a reservoir with the pipe leading into the compost and several holes to distibute the water.

I use white plastic waste water pipe (about £2 for 2m) and cut into 8 inch tubes and then insert a couple of tubes into each bag. It's then easy to pour water into the grow bag.

I use empty mastic tubes with the ends cut off. Free from work ;)

I bury a rinsed plastic milk bottle (with the bottom cut off) kneck-down next to my courgettes, which works in a similar way I guess. I can see how a collar in a grow bag would be helpful and I guess it makes sure the roots all round the plant get water - perhaps that would help to keep the plant balanced and stable in a grow bag?

The tube/pipe idea is good. Will have to get some over the weekend. Will sure make the watering easier than it is now!
