I use chicken wire over large tubs of my wild flower seedlings..maximum light..zero squat waste.I also use it aroung the trunks of my trees and large shrubs to foil the beasts claw sharpening!!

I use orange peel. When you've peeled your oranges, just sprinkle the peel over the tops of the tubs. You need to chnage it regularly - you get about a week at most out of it - but it keeps my local cats away. And oranges are good for you! I did see something very interesting online - you can also buy lion droppings which the cats smell and won't come anywhere near! I guess that I wouldn't either so not really willing to try that one.

I do like cats but they are a nuisance. I've made some kind of cloches/mini tunnels with big hoops of wire over my veg beds, mostly to stop the cats. The tops of the hoops are tied to a horizontal bamboo cane, and a vertical cane is cut short and the horizontal one tied to that. Then I put pea/fruit netting over the top (or fleece to stop carrot fly or clear plastic for tender crops) and pegged down round the sides with short pieces of wire. They only cost a few pounds to make and do seem to work, although the fleece one isn't as good as the mesh at the moment (probably need a bigger piece of fleece).
I'll try and take a picture which might explain it better, but I think you could adapt this fairly easily for pots.

We use twigs and just lay them across the drills. They have to be long sharp and pointy for it to work well.

lol, some intresting methods here. I haven't yet had problems with the cats but i've heard that if you leave 2 litre clear plastic bottles filled with water on your garden it scares the cats away.

I hung some cd's from my runner bean canes to scare the birds - which is working a treat.

As a bonus - I've not seen a cat in the garden since then, maybe they dont like the reflection either ?
