I have an old enamel bath on my allotment I was going to try and grow carrots in it, one to use it as a raised bed and secondly to try and avoid carrot fly. I haven't grown carrots before - will this be a good idea or not and if so what would be the best mix for compost and soil.

I have a bath that I use for my strawberry bed, I drilled holes into it every few inches along its length for drainage and so far it is fine. If you are buying soil for it, you will need a fair amount.
