some pots, some compost and no idea!!! In an attempt to interest the kids more in gardening, I've bought some dwarf runner bean seeds(Hestia) and a pack of mixed lettuce seeds. Was hoping to grow these in pots, as the amount of perennial seeds I've sown there's not going to be an empty patch of soil anywhere!!

Has anyone tried the Hestia??? My boys tried growing Runners 3 yrs in a row and after them doing abysmally the wind generally carries them off, pot and all! Are they really dwarf or will they still need support??
Can lettuce be grown in pots?? It's a sort of long trough, 3ft long x 1ft deep. Will this keep us in lettuce for a while???
Sorry, so many questions...but I've been bigging this up to the kids and now I'm worried that they'll fail and they're first intro to gardening will be a failure

Your lettuce will certainly grow in the trough Windy. If you grow some 'cut and come again' and stagger sowing or sow a mixture of varieties they should last a while. You could also sow radishes with the lettuce as they'll mature and be pulled before the lettuce is ready.

Thanks Dave [IMG] The lettuce seeds are a mixed pack - with the varieties named on the pack, will these be okay???
Also, when should I start these off??
Will the compost in the trough be okay for repeat sowings or should I keep changing it??? Also, (sorry! loads of questions again!)do I feed them with anything???

A mixed packet is great Windy you should get a nice variety with it.
If you are using a trough you'll really need to provide a bit of feeding for optimum results. I'd look for a liquid feed that you can dilute in a watering can. Since you are growing for leaf growth you shouldn't use a high potash feed like tomato feed but go for a good general or rose fertiliser.
I assume you know about treating your blueberry with ericaceous fertiliser and not using tap water on it.

Thanks Blackthorn [IMG] The only one who's shown a glimmer of interest so far is,surprisingly,my boy! But he doesn't 'understand' flowers so I thought edible might be the way to go... [IMG]

    Windy,
Tap water is fine as long as you leave to stand for a day or so.
The chlorine eventually evaporates away or so im told

Thanks azad [IMG] That's great because I haven't yet got my water butt installed (it'll probably be high summer at this rate, and there won't be any rain to fill it!!!!) So I can just leave a watering can full outside - brilliant!!! [IMG] :D
