sweetcorn

    I planted just two corns to try out and they now have three corns on each plant,i thought one had to plant them in groups,but seems to be not the case [​IMG] [​IMG]

    Yes, I heard that you need groupings, macleaf, to germinate / pollinate ... but two works with the human race, so why not? :D :D

    I have also tried growing sweetcorn for the first time this year. The only space I had available was 6x4 foot and I planted half a dozen. So far they have 1 corn on each plant. It could be that living on the east coast everything ripens later than 'normal'and unless we have an 'Indian summer' up here they are not going to ripen. :rolleyes:

    Poppet,We grow ours in blocks and have already harvested them and put them in the frezzer,though our variety was called Early Extra Sweet.
    They may ripen later the further North you go

    Kandy, did you blanche yours first? I just recently read in an article here that's it's best to freeze them with one layer of husk on as soon as they are picked.

    I am in northwest and mine are also ready for picking, I have already picked half a dozen.

    No blanching, straight in freezer. (hope it works, previously never grew enough to need freezing) [​IMG]

    Hi LOL.No we don't blanche them. Mr Kandy sits with a knife after we have stripped them down to the kernels and then cuts them off of the cob.It is very messy and time consuming,that is where disposable gloves come in handy.We then freeze them straight away.They get cooked when they come out of the freezer,or are added to stews and other home made meals.

    It is best to prepare them quick or else the sugar in them turns to starch, and they lose their sweet taste.

    Interesting, Kandy ... and now I know where your kinky rubber gloves come into it! :D :D :D

    T'other half prefers corn off the husk so your way would suit him to a tee .. I, on the other hand, prefer it on the cob as nature intended it!

    Yes LOL.It is hard work doing all this preperation of the fruit and vegetables,but at least they are healthier and cheaper than the limp expensive stuff you see at the supermarkets over here.

    We are at the moment in the process of preparing vegetables for the freezer.I'm doing Runner beans and Mr Kandy is in the kitchen doing Victoria Plums.Not a lot of time to chat on here at the moment.It will be better when the night's are really dark and most of the harvest is in.

    We also use a farm shop,to buy vegetables and fruit we cannot grow,ok it is more expensive,but at least it tastes better and keeps longer in the fridge.

    By the way,do you have a time differance over there in Portugal?

    No, same time as you .. the only EU country that is ... even Northern Spain above us goes on the one hour difference to keep all their colonies equal.

    Fruit and veg is so cheap here ... large peppers, green and red, 30c (20p) each, lovely lettuces above the same price ... carrier bags full for nada!

    Sweetcorn is new here so not readily available for "people consumption" ... it's widely grown for animal consumption. Strange! One of my favourites and t'other half's only!

    26 years tomorrow,though at the moment,we are more worried about the state of the dog's health,than celebrating.
    If you look on the pet thread I have put two posts on there,unless you have already read it.

    This keyboard is getting sticky from the beans.No gloves on tonight.

    We picked two carrier bags full last night.I measured one of them and it was twelve inches.I took a photo of it,with a ruler as a measurement.I shall put it this thread when I get the chance.I cannot keep up with the youngsters tonight on the muppet thread.At least it is good to talk.

    A place in the sun was from Portugal tonight,but didn't really see it as I was getting our evening meal.

    It must be nice to get fruit and vegetables so cheap where you are.

    We always see a lot of sweetcorn growing when we go over to Wight.

    Hope the Kitty's are ok.Say hello to your other half for me
