I work in an infant school and have been asked to start up a veggie plot that the children can maintain. we don't have a budget so no greenhouse or anything other than bottle cloches! I want to get them going in September- can anyone suggest what veg we can seed out in September to get them motivated? (the kids motivated- not the seeds!)

Hi kittykate, sounds like a good thing to start, you can try some broadbeans, spring greens, onions, shallots, just for a start, but you should check the seed packet labels to see which are suitable for autumn sowings ,good luck keep me posted as vegtables are my number one like, and like you i help with several school veg plots so if you need any help just ask, good luck........

Thanks Dosh and banana man... always good to get a friendly welcome! Was planning on broad beans as I like to plant a few in clear plastic pots so the little ones (I work with age 3 and up) can see the roots forming. Onions are a good idea though. Are there any fruits that we could get going before winter sets in? Or should we leave it until spring. I'm not allowed trees although I'm trying to get the head to agree to the miniature varieties.

The consumers' association did a great report on veggies that kids love growing and eating (some surprises - broadies were a HUGE favourite). If you have trouble finding the report I'll pm it you. Good luck [IMG]

Thanks for that everyone, I'm off on holiday today (we have a boat on the broads) so I shall be back in 2 weeks- refreshed and ready to rescue the garden! At least it's so dry the lawn won't be around my ears!

[IMG] You could have a 'naughty pot' instead of a naughty step! Have a great holiday. [IMG]
